A practical definition of the word ‘sustainability’ would be ‘the avoidance of the depletion of natural resources to maintain an ecological balance’. You’re absolutely right if you read that and thought, ‘another day, another definition off Wikipedia to make things sound collegiate.’ A more romanticised definition would be ‘to live and to let live.’ Short and sweet. Easy on the brain cells. However, isn’t it ironical that a concept as simple as this would create an immeasurable amount of change in the world, only if we did our parts to make it happen? Give it a second to sink in. It would be amazing to have the planet breathe again.
The topic that we have chosen is (drumroll, please) ‘Sustainable Fashion and Capsule Wardrobe Styling’. Hold your horses, we’ve got answers to some of the possible questions that you might have after reading that, the first one being: What exactly IS sustainable fashion?
If I were to answer that in the simplest way possible, it would be ‘fashion that won’t take it’s toll on the environment OR your wallet.’ By reusing, recycling and re-purposing clothes, you are doing your part to help the environment. Good on you! Sustainable fashion is strictly cruelty-free and does not promote wearing animal skins. It’s also the best way to cease the problem created by fast fashion that has been plaguing the world at recent. The term fast fashion is used to describe clothing styles that travel rapidly from the catwalk to shops to follow emerging trends is fast fashion. Fast fashion makes it easier for mass shoppers to buy fashionable clothes for cheap. Here’s a fun statistical fact : 80 billion garments are manufactured each year, the average of which is worn maybe about 10 times before it’s thrown away. This is the problem with fast fashion. Sure, it’s cheap. Yes, it’s trendy.
However, it doesn’t last long and it’s definitely NOT sustainable.
This brings us to the next question: What can we do to help?
For starters, limit the clothes bought from fast fashion stores and outlets. Instead, choose to invest in a few good pieces that you can wear repeatedly in multiple ways. An excellent way to do this is to buy from thrift stores instead. Thrift shops online and offline give us an opportunity to give certain clothes another chance; to reuse and love clothes that were pre-loved and used. Recycling clothes can help reduce fast fashion and waste production to a large extent. It gives us the liberty to experiment with different styles at affordable prices and at no cost which has to be borne by the environment. Another solution to recycle and reuse your own old or basic pieces is Capsule Wardrobe Styling.
What is Capsule Wardrobe Styling?
Capsule Wardrobe Styling is a concept that emerged recently in the fashion industry in order to promote sustainability and reduce fast fashion. It’s the process of styling a few basic pieces of clothing in several different ways and make it look unique despite being a basic piece. It’s a great way of re-using and recycling your clothes and turning them from something you had completely forgotten about into something that you would love to wear again! Several celebrities and influencers are inspired by the concept of capsule wardrobe styling and have stressed on the importance of sustainable fashion numerous times to spread awareness on the increase of fast fashion.
