"Kuch khaas awazon se dil ki dhadkane tez ho jaati hain." - Rizwan Khan
An album, according to Wiki (yes, we only provide you with hardcore facts) is a collection of audio recordings on a compact disc. Bollywood albums are different. Bollywood usually makes movies which come under the genre of “musical-drama”. Hence, albums are released before the movie, to build the hype for it. My Name is Khan was a movie worthy of international fame, which to this day it still receives. Yet, another gem jotted in this sceptre of cinematic genius is its album. It comprises a thesaurus of emotions aimed at its audience. Being true to our blogs though, we discard the label of “album”. We believe there is poetic genius in Bollywood, hence we'd like to call this collection of songs, an anthology.
I. Sajda
Sajda is the warmth you would want to seek out every winter afternoon, a song that makes you feel like the entire world has come to a standstill when you listen to it. It describes a love so pure, almost like worship. The devotion the protagonist holds for his beloved is evident in this song. Repeating these lines, it seems to be saying that the protagonist is determined to worship his lover, each day, every day, hoping to convey his reverence for her. The beauty in this song lies in how it delivers the selflessness he holds for his lover.
Performed by: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Richa Sharma, Shankar Mahadevan, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Written by: Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Niranjan Iyengar, Shankar Mahadevan
II. Tere Naina
This album hosts incredibly beautiful songs and one of these masterpieces include Tere Naina. Tere Naina is a song the protagonist dedicates to his lover where he describes the beauty of his lover’s eyes. Tere Naina talks about how eyes are the window to the soul and how they communicate in their language. Even if words fail, the eyes speak. In this song, the protagonist considers his lover’s eyes his saviour, the ointment to his pain and his oasis in the desert.
Performed by: Shafqat Amanat Ali, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Written by: Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Niranjan Iyengar, Shankar Mahadevan
III. Noor-e-Khuda
Noor e Khuda is a plea for help sung to reach the Supreme power. This is one of the very few songs that nailed the thin line between beautiful and heart-wrenching. The same line Rizwan walks throughout the movie. A frame in the movie, completely summarises the song when Khan replies, "Namaaz (worship) is not affected by time or the clock, but by one's own intention." to a couple on the road. The protagonists’ desperation and obsession to seek God is evident in each word sung. One might think that this song expresses disbelief in the existence of God, but in reality, it does the exact opposite. His deep faith in God makes it possible for him to deliver and point out all the existing harsh realities, hoping God will listen to him and solve it.
Performed by: Adnan Sami, Shreya Ghoshal, Shankar Mahadevan, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Written by: Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Niranjan Iyengar, Shankar Mahadevan
IV. Allah Hi Reham
Allah Hi Reham is your ray of hope in the darkness. The song beautifully describes how human tenacity knows no bounds. This song is about finding solace and strength in God. It voices the thought that God is kind and faith in him can carry one past the hardest of torture and pain.
Performed by: Rashid Khan, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Written by: Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Niranjan Iyengar, Shankar Mahadevan
V. Rang De
Rang De is a hidden sapphire among the gems. The song itself summarizes the movie. It calls for the listener to be optimistic and strive in adversities, just like how it was for Khan. It’s like that one stubborn strand of grass, clinging onto his beliefs when the whole world was like a turbulent wind, blowing against him. Storms which could uproot the strongest of barks were but mere obstacles in front of Khan’s tenacity. The song paints an image of a painter who went out to the world and painted the canvas of the sky with peace.
Performed by: Suraj Jagan, Shankar Mahadevan, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
Written by: Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Niranjan Iyengar, Shankar Mahadevan
